The 5 Best Ways to Save Money When Shopping

November 22, 2022 by Everyday Alaska

With prices of everything on the rise these days, everyone is looking for ways to save money when shopping. Whether grocery shopping, gift shopping, or making larger purchases, all of these ideas will help you save money. Some ideas you may have heard of before, but some you may not have, so keep on reading if you want to keep that cash in your pocket!

Please note that this post contains affiliate links which I may earn commission from. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Commissions from these qualifying purchases help support Everyday Alaska at no extra cost to you. Please follow the instructions on all of the recommended items. All of the information provided is my personal opinion, unless otherwise cited or noted.

What are the best ways to save money when shopping?

Rakuten and TopCashBack

Rakuten and TopCashBack are fantastic money saving apps. Before you shake your head and say you have too many useless apps already, hear me out. I have earned over $200 in cash back from Rakuten. I’ve earned almost $20 from TopCashBack in just one purchase as well. Both of these sites give you cash back on purchases, and also provide you with easy-to-find coupon codes and deals. This way you’re saving money, and also earning money back. I always use them when doing Christmas, birthday, or other gift shopping. You can earn $30 back with a purchase of $30 or more on Rakuten with this link here, and $10 cash back with my TopCashBack referral link.

Earning over $200 with Rakuten has paid for Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, and more.

Price Matching

It never hurts to ask, especially when it comes to price matching. Many stores that you may not expect will price match competitors prices, or match their online price. The place I primarily do this is Petco. Many times the in-store prices at our local Petco are higher than what they have online, so all I have to do is screenshot the online price, show it to the store associate, and they change it to the lower online price.

It’s best to do your research beforehand to make it easier and more convenient for everyone when it’s time for checkout. Have the lower prices of items saved, and check ahead of time to see if the retailer will price match certain items. It’s a fast and easy way to save money.

Compare Prices Online

One of the money saving tips I’ve been using most lately has been comparing prices online. Ever since grocery pick up became popular, grocery stores have the prices of their items online. This makes saving money on groceries and other items much easier. How? Well, you can easily compare prices between stores without the hassle of driving from store to store! But, beware of price changes, as some stores such as Walgreens have different prices listed online than they have in your local store. If you run into this problem, price matching might not always be available, but there is a way to get around this issue and still reduce your shopping expenses.

The secret to saving money and avoiding the price difference is pick up orders. I place my Walgreens orders online, and then am able to get the lower online price plus use any promo codes they may have. It’s one of my favorite money saving hacks. Plus, at some stores such as Safeway, you may get an additional discount for doing your first pick up order as well.

Apps

Store apps will often times have great coupons that will help you stay within your monthly shopping budget. The ones I use most often are for Safeway and Walgreens. According to Intuit “the average cost of food per month for one person ranges from $150 to $300, depending on age.” This cost is quickly rising, so saving money on groceries and lowering your expenses is essential.

Using apps for certain stores allows you to clip digital coupons that members of their rewards program benefit from. I highly recommend doing this as you can save hundreds of dollars over time, and helps me save money every month. These programs may also allow you to accumulate points, such as gas rewards or cash back. You can check out the amount I’ve saved with Safeway coupons and my fuel rewards progress below.

It’s amazing how much you can save with coupons and checking out sale ads.

Email

Sign up for the emails. You may not want to get bombarded with deals and emails from companies and stores all year long, but the first sign-up email usually includes a discount code, which is well worth it. Plus, if you chose to do so, you can always unsubscribe after you have your code and you’ve made your purchase.

Do you have any bonus tips on how to save money when shopping?

Promotional Codes and Coupons

Well I’m glad you asked, because yes, I do have one more great money saving idea! In fact, I just used this idea last night. My husband was looking to save some money on jeans. The ones he wears are often $70 or more, but they were on sale for about 40% off for Black Friday. What a great deal, right! But, since I love to save, I just had to see if an additional coupon would work before he completed his order. A quick Google search helped me find a 20% off coupon. He added it to the order and saved $16 more!

So, this being said, I’d suggest checking for any coupons or promotional codes before placing orders on anything from jeans to Papa Murphy’s pizza! It’s always worth a look! Plus, promo codes can help you save tons on gifts, and with Christmas fast approaching they can be a huge help. (With people spending over $600+ on Christmas gifts according to Ramsey Solutions, this is a great way to save. Also, don’t forget the reason for the season. Save on shopping and enjoy some favorite Christmas traditions, too.)

I know money is a topic no one wants to chat about, but when it comes to saving money we’re all about it! If you want to save money when shopping, using one or all of these ideas will definitely help you. Happy shopping AND saving, friends!

The Best Christmas Movies to Watch During a Cozy Movie Night

November 4, 2022 by Everyday Alaska

I love Christmas and everything that comes with it. The music, decorating, time with family, gift shopping, Nativity plays, Christmas movies, and more. Here in Alaska, hibernation mode is in full swing during Christmas, and that means movie nights happen quite often. Below, you can find a list of the best Christmas movies to cozy up to during this wonderful season.

The Reason for the Season and Heartwarming Favorites

The Star

If you only get the chance to watch one Christmas movie this season, watch The Star. It’s an entertaining, fun, and captivating movie about the birth of Jesus and the events leading up to it as told by animals. I know the animal part may sound a little silly, but trust me, it’s a must-watch movie that’ll remind you of the reason for Christmas. You can even purchase it on Prime Video.

The Little Drummer Boy

If you’ve heard the Christmas song of The Little Drummer Boy, movie is about just that. This Christmas classic can often be found in box sets with some of the other more “retro” movies like Jack Frost listed below.

Annabelle’s Wish

Another animated Christmas movie with talking animals. Apparently that’s my favorite category, but this movie is really too cute. This story of a Christmas wish that brings a ton of joy to a little boy may just make you cry. Might as well order the Puffs up now!

Christmas Comedy

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

I had to start out the comedy section with my family’s favorite, Christmas Vacation. We have watched this every year since I can remember. It’s a relatable movie for many families, with lots of family chaos, decoration disasters, a house in shambles, and crazy family times that make for good memories. If you’re looking for a good laugh this season, Christmas Vacation is sure to give you more than one.

Four Christmases

While trying to avoid family dysfunction over the holidays, a couple steps right in to four very chaotic Christmases that put their relationship with each other and their families to the test. Much like Christmas Vacation, the relatable and over-the-top parts of this movie are what make it funny, and it will leave you with many good laughs.

Elf

Honestly, I really didn’t think I’d like this movie. I thought it would be more silly than actually funny, so I didn’t start watching it until a few years ago. It really is a silly movie, but it won me over because it is funny and feel-good, too. It has sort of a Rudolph vibe, with a “misfit” trying to find his place, and is a cute story about helping others and sharing in the joy of giving.

Christmas with the Kranks

A couple of modern day Scrooges try to skip Christmas, only to have it backfire in the most hilarious way and find themselves back in the midst of their full-blown holiday traditions.

Christmas Classics

Jack Frost

Jack Frost is a short and adorable movie about the love story of Jack Frost. This classic is a cute, wintery tale that I watch every year.

Rudolph the Red Nosed-Reindeer

You can’t help but sing the little Christmas jingle when you read the title to this adorable movie. With Yukon Cornelius and Misfit Toys on his side, there’s no telling what adventures Rudolph will have. It’s a cute, must-watch movie.

White Christmas

I’m not a fan of musicals, so I never really thought I’d be a fan of White Christmas. Boy, was I wrong. White Christmas is much more than a musical. It’s a story of friends helping friends, spreading the Christmas spirit, and singing some tunes while doing it. Plus, it’s set in my favorite decade to watch, and the costumes are fantastic.

The Year Without a Santa Claus

Why would Santa quit his jolly job? Find out in this popular Christmas classic where you’ll also meet the Heat and Snow Misers!

Tip: If you’d like to get many of these Rankin/Bass classics together, check out this set of eighteen Christmas movies. Also, Prime Video has many Christmas movies as well. Check them out here!

Now that you’ve got your movie list down, it’s time to grab some hot coco, popcorn, and a cozy blanket to settle in for the night! Looking for more great Christmas traditions? Check out my list here! Merry Christmas, folks!

Is the Instant Pot Really Worth It?

All of the information provided is my personal opinion, unless otherwise cited or noted.

Small kitchen appliances. Is it possible to have too many? My head says no, but my shelf space says yes. Read ahead to find out if the Instant Pot is one of those appliances you should make room for on your shelf, or if you should save the money and the shelf space. If you want the final verdict, you can skip to the bottom, otherwise read on to get the whole scoop.

Cons

I figured we might as well start with the downsides and work our way to the pros in this Instant Pot review, so here we go!

The Learning Curve

My husband and I were lucky enough to receive an Instant Pot Duo Nova for Christmas a few years back. I was so excited, but also terrified. Pressure cooking dinner in our kitchen?! Umm, no thank you. I wasn’t too sure about using it for quite awhile, so there it sat. Then, after seeing many good recipes and the benefits of using this cooker, I decided to give it a try.

I throughly read the instructions (a first for me since I usually just wing it), watched how-to videos on YouTube, and built up the confidence to do my test run with it. I would love to say it went swimmingly, but it totally freaked me out. The sound of the pressure being released was much louder than I anticipated, and I thought it was going to blow up. Not fun. But, everything went as it should and I was ready to get cookin’!

After figuring out how to operate it, it was time to learn about cooking times. This was a learning curve, but now I feel like I’ve finally got it figured out. Cook time magnets and stickers really helped me figure out times, but there were a few instances in between where I expected to pull out fully cooked chicken and ended up having it raw in the middle. Time and repetition has helped me get a handle on cooking with the Instant Pot. Now I feel much more comfortable using it, and get more consistent results.

This cook time sticker is a helpful guide to on the Instant Pot.

Space

The downside of the Instant Pot is that it is large. If you have a smaller house like me, then you know space in the kitchen is valuable. This appliance has to be fairly big for what it does and the volume they can hold, but they really take up a hefty amount of counter and shelf space.

Pros

Now that we’ve covered the cons, lets move on to all the positives of the Instant Pot.

Variety

This is really a multifunctional kitchen tool. You can use it for slow cooking, steaming, rice cooking, and more. Plus, there are tons of recipes out there to use (just check Pinterest!), which really gives you a good variety of things to cook.

Stove Top Space

The Instant Pot really shines during holidays. When you’ve got all your burners filled up, you can set up the Instant Pot on your counter and cook a side or main dish there. I think it’s especially useful for cooking mashed potatoes when making a spread for Christmas or Thanksgiving.

Multitasking

In a rush to make dinner for guests but you also have to clean up the kitchen before they get there? No problem! Get your Instant Pot meal started and let it do all the work cooking while you clean.

My most made Instant Pot meal. Steel cut oats and raisins, topped with nuts and banana after cooking.

Quick Meals

Instant Pot’s really do make quick work out of cooking. I primarily use mine for four different things: rice, chicken, potatoes, and steel cut oats. Using this handy appliance for steel cut oats every morning makes breakfast a breeze. No waiting for water to boil or making sure it doesn’t boil over, and it’s consistent. It’s just so simple.

The Final Review

So, now that you’ve read about the pros and cons, what do you think? After using my Instant Pot for a few years now, I’d say it’s worth getting. If you can swing the space to squeeze an Instant Pot between your waffle iron and toaster, it’s time to try the Instant Pot for yourself!

Tip: If you’re looking for a great deal on the Instant Pot, check out sales during and around major holidays, including Black Friday!

My Most-Loved Christmas Traditions

October 20, 2022 by Everyday Alaska

I love traditions. Seasonal traditions, holiday traditions, cultural traditions. All of them. So, that being said, you can correctly assume that there are many Christmas traditions I love, and I’ll be sharing those with you here!

Lefse

Does your family have a Christmas tradition that is traditional to your heritage? We do! Making lefse is one of them. Lefse is like a very thin Norwegian tortilla made with potatoes, and my family really enjoys it. Making something from your heritage with your family is a great way to start the Christmas season. Not sure what traditions are associated with your heritage? Check it out on Google, or adopt a fun tradition from a different culture as well!

DIY Your Own Wreath

Start a new Christmas tradition, save money, and have fun doing it! A few years ago I started making my own Christmas wreaths, and it’s so much fun! All I do is use a metal wreath frame, cut some branches from trees on our property, and weave branches through the wire frame. Then, I add a bow, lights, and any additional touches I’d like from the craft store. When Christmas is over, we have a campfire using the branches, and I save the frame, faux berries, lights, and bow for the next year. It’s super simple, takes up virtually no space between seasons, and is very cute and customizable.

Tip: If you don’t have branches near your home to cut, you can use Christmas garland to weave through the frame. You can check out some other great DIY crafts here!

Fontanini

Fontanini is a company that makes beautiful, heirloom quality Nativity sets. My grandma and mom got me started with a set when I was five, and I’ve been collecting pieces to the Nativity ever since. It’s 100% my favorite thing to set up during Christmas, and is a great reminder of the reason for the season.

Part of the Fontanini collection. Mary and Joseph passing the innkeepers home, where they found there was ”no room in the inn”.

Operation Christmas Child

Tis the season to bless and be blessed! Operation Christmas Child sends shoeboxes full of necessities, toys, and more to children around the world. We have been packing shoeboxes for a few years now, and it’s so fun to shop for these items, write letters to recipients, and see what countries they end up going to. Operation Christmas Child is really spreading joy to the world! Follow them on Instagram to see the impact your shoeboxes will make!

If you’re looking to donate locally, there are often many organizations looking for volunteers and donations at homeless shelters, food banks, churches, and more. Also, another great way to donate is to give gifts in someones name. For example, if you have a friend or relative that ”already has enough stuff” and you’ve been told they don’t want a gift, why not give a donation in their name? You can do this in your local area, or around the globe, and it makes for a great gift all around.

Tip: Want to verify that you’re money is going to a reputable charity? Check out Charity Navigator or Charity Watch to verify where your gifts are going before you donate.

Packing some Operation Christmas Child boxes.

Sledding

If you’re spending Christmas in a snowy state, now is the time for all those fun winter activities. One of my favorites is sledding, followed by cozying up inside with a toasty cup of hot chocolate.

Christmas Lights Tour

Another one of my favorites, the Christmas lights tour! Crank up the Christmas tunes and cruise your neighborhood for lights. You never know what you might see!

A camper display at the drive thru light show in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Christmas Movies

Grab the popcorn, blankets, and Christmas classics, it’s movie night! Watch some retro Rudolph and enjoy the fun of your childhood favorites.

Hallmark Ornaments

A fun Christmas collection to start is with Hallmark ornaments. You can collect series of them every year, or choose a little something different each season. They make great Christmas gifts as well.

Cookies

You can’t go through the Christmas season without whipping up a batch of yummy cookies. Ever since I can remember, my mom has been making sugar cookies for Christmas. We’d have my cousins and friends over to decorate, and it was so fun. Baking and decorating cookies with friends and family is one of my favorite Christmas traditions.

Cutting out some sugar cookies to decorate.

Delivering Treats

Once you have those cookies done, it’s time to spread that joy around! Take time to visit your family, friends, neighbors, and others during this season, and bring them some tasty treats, too.

Tip: You can often find cookie tins at 70% off or more after Christmastime each year. That’s the prefect time to stock up for next year’s deliveries!

Fruitcake

Don’t knock it till you try it! And if you’ve tried it and didn’t like it, give another recipe a shot. I really don’t love some fruitcakes, but my grandma’s fruitcake recipe is a Christmas staple. Whether you’re making it, eating it, or both, you’ve at least got to try it once!

Christmas Plays

Visit Christmas plays, concerts, and more in your area. A church in our town does “Bethlehem Revisited” ever year, which accounts the events of the birth of Jesus. It’s pretty magical to see, and is great for little kiddos, those who may not know the story of Jesus’s birth, and a good reminder of the meaning of Christmas for all of us.

Matching Pajamas

You can roll your eyes at this one, it’s fine. I just can’t get over how cute matching family pajamas are, especially when we get them for our dog as well. It’s just too adorable, and makes for a good gift to open on Christmas Eve.

Cut Down Your Own Christmas Tree

For about seven years now, we’ve been cutting down our own Christmas trees. Are they full, perfect, and beautiful? No. Do we have a fun and memorable time doing it? Yes! If you have property or an area near you where you can harvest your own tree, take advantage of it and start a new Christmas tradition.

Cutting down Christmas trees. One of my favorite new Christmas traditions.
It may not be the perfect tree, but it’s the perfect one for me!

Christmas Breakfast

A tradition I’m hoping to start doing is Christmas/Christmas Eve breakfast. Maybe lingonberry crepes? Maybe fruit soup? I haven’t decided yet, but I’ll let you all know what we end up doing this year!

Hopefully this post has helped you get in the Christmas spirit and added some meaningful and fun traditions to this beautiful season. Share your favorite Christmas traditions in the comments below, and let me know if you plan on starting any of the traditions you read about in this post! Merry Christmas, friends!

Jewelry by Johan: My Experience with Custom Jewelry

September 6, 2022 by Everyday Alaska

Please note that this post contains affiliate links which I may earn commission from. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Please follow the instructions on all of the recommended items. All of the information provided is my personal opinion, unless otherwise cited or noted.

Weddings can be pretty stressful. There are so many decisions to make. What type of cake to serve? What shoes to wear? What songs to play? What ring to buy? And that question is how I happened upon Jewelry by Johan.

I’m a pretty sentimental person, so I knew I wanted to get something unique and custom for my husband’s ring. Something that fit his personality and was memorable. When I found out I could use a moose shed he found to make his ring, I was hooked. That’s when my experience with Jewelry by Johan began.

My husband’s moose antler shed wedding band turned out even better than expected.

Jewelry by Johan

Jewelry by Johan is a custom jewelry designer. They make their jewelry in America, using a variety of unique materials to create one of a kind, heirloom pieces.

Materials

Is your loved one interested in more traditional diamond pieces? They have that! Do they love space? Meteorite jewelry may be the perfect out of this world gift for them! Outdoorsey? Try an item made with antler! Are they musically inclined? Check out their guitar string rings! Going for a prehistoric vibe? Dinosaur bone might be just the ticket! There is really a material that will fit any interest and personality.

These custom crushed antler earrings from Jewelry by Johan turned out beautifully.

As I mentioned, I chose a moose shed that my husband found to create the pieces of jewelry that Jewelry by Johan made for us. JBJ does have antler that they can supply, but if you have your own piece that is large enough to use, you can send it to them and they will use it to create your custom piece. If your piece is too small, they can still use it by turning it into crushed antler. They then use the pieces of it to create your unique accessories.

Additional Customization

In addition to the variety of materials you can choose from, there is also the option for text and image engraving for certain sizes and materials of rings. Since I chose to use antler for my items, I was not able to use this service, but if you are able to do so it adds an additional personal element to your pieces.

The antler in this band really created the classic look I had hoped for.

Pieces

There are many possibilities when it comes to what jewelry you can create with JBJ. They make and design rings, earrings, necklaces, tie clips, and more. I purchased my husband’s wedding ring, two sets of earrings (one for me and one for my mom), and three tie clips (one each for my husband, dad, and father-in-law) from them. All of the pieces turned out incredible and came in beautiful boxes. I couldn’t have been happier with them, and my experience of dealing with JBJ was absolutely awesome.

Customer Service

I didn’t go full bridezilla during wedding planning, but I was pretty darn picky about what ring I was going to get for my husband. I had so many question about how ring sizing with antler worked, if my antler sample would work, and more that I called and emailed wayyy too many times. Each time I got the best, most polite customer service, and got all of my questions answered. They do a great job of walking you through the process of custom jewelry design and explain all you need to know. I was so impressed by their professionalism and kindness, and can’t recommend them highly enough for both their products and great customer service.

Whether you’re looking for a wedding ring, earrings for mom, or a bracelet for a friend, Jewelry by Johan has it all. Their mix of high quality, unique, custom jewelry and exceptional customer service has earned them a lifetime customer in me, and I hope they can do the same for you.

For any questions about my experience with JBJ or about what I had made, please comment below and I’ll answer as soon as possible. Also, don’t forget to check their website for discount codes and sign up for their email list to see current sales! Thanks for reading and happy shopping, folks!

10 Reasons Why You Should Start Gardening Today

July 22, 2022 by Everyday Alaska

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re already considering starting your own garden. And if you’re considering starting your own garden, but haven’t done it yet, this post is for you.

Maybe you need that extra boost to get you going (and growing!). Maybe you don’t think you can do it. Maybe you think it’s too expensive. Maybe you don’t think you have the knowledge or skill to grow your own food. Toss out the doubt and plant the seeds of confidence (and carrots, lettuce, peas, onion….and so much more), and lets get growing!

It takes time to learn.

Learning how to garden takes time, which is one the the reasons you should start gardening now. You can get a wealth of valuable information from books, YouTube, Pinterest, and more, but I feel like learning to garden is more of a trial and error process. Don’t get me wrong, many of the ”rules”, guidelines, and suggestions regarding growing are likely the same from one place to another, but some of it is very location, soil, and weather dependent, so not everything is a ”one garden fits all” deal. What works for one may not work for another. This is why it’s great to talk to local gardeners to get better insight into what works for your gardening zone, and begin gardening so you have time to learn. Then, eventually, you may become one of those local gardeners people go to for advice.

A small batch of carrots from the garden. Start gardening today to learn how to grow your own.
In the spirit of learning from mistakes here is an example of one of ours. We ended up with these tiny baby carrots because the soil we thought was good was actually too clay-like and ended up stunting the carrot growth. Choose your soil wisely!

Become more self sufficient.

Self sufficiency builds confidence, and having confidence is key to succeeding in many aspects of life. Taking a tiny seed and growing something that will feed yourself, friends, and family is an amazing thing. You may not expect something so minuscule to produce anything, but with your help, water, and sunshine it will grow. And when you start gardening you’ll not only be growing fruits, veggies, and your confidence, you’ll also be able to begin relying on yourself for food instead of the grocery store. This self sufficiency and self reliance is a great skill to have.

Learn about your food.

When you buy fruit and veggies at your grocery store or market, do you really know where they come from? While there’s nothing wrong with buying things from the grocery store, I do it often, it is much more assuring to get vegetables right from your own garden were you know where and how they were grown and taken care of.

It’s also so interesting to see the growth process for various things. Learning about the different nuances for crops is fascinating. Even just reading seed packets about different varieties of the same vegetable is really eye opening, and shows you just how many things go into growing your food. With that being said, it’s likely still easier than you think!

Start gardening today to learn how to grow your own lettuce.
This year I finally got my lettuce to start looking like an actual head of lettuce! Patience is key.

It’s easier than you think.

You can really make gardening as easy or as complicated as you’d like. If you want to research, do soil testing, compare varieties, and more, that’s great! If you want to plop some carrot seeds into finger-poked holes in the soil, thats great, too! I know that technically there are probably right ways and wrong ways to start gardening, but if it works for you, then it works. And it does’t always need to be hard.

I’m all about the trial and error method. I’m all about what’s simple and easy to figure out. And guess what? I still get veggies to grow! So, if you’re delaying starting your garden because you think it may be too difficult, think again. Yes, research and planning helps, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be difficult or complicated. Just give it a try and see for yourself how simple it can be.

It’s inexpensive to start gardening.

Like any hobby, gardening can be as expensive as you want to make it. You don’t need a massive greenhouse with a self-watering system and temperature controlled fans to start gardening (although that would be awesome). With probably less than $30 you can start planting. All you really need is soil, a container or space for planting, and some seeds. Pretty simple, right? Also, if you grow your own produce you may even save some money in the long run.

You’ll appreciate your food more.

The more food you grow and harvest yourself, the more you’ll appreciate it. It’s so easy to go to the store, pick up a bag of carrots, take them home, and start munching on them without giving much thought to how the carrots got there. It took the process of getting seeds, planting, watering, patiently waiting, harvesting, bagging, and then transporting them to the store for you to get them, not to mention the many other things it takes to put produce on the shelves. Unless you grow it yourself, you’ll likely not appreciate fresh produce as much as it deserves.

It’s green in more ways than one.

Your gained appreciation of how produce is grown will likely encourage you to waste less fruits and veggies. After the time and effort you put in to growing your own, you’ll see just how valuable they are. Is the lettuce you grew starting to wilt? Better make a salad tonight! Are your strawberries getting soft? Time to find a recipe for them! Not only that, but by cutting out some of the transportation and shortening the distance from garden to plate, you’ll be saving fuel as well.

Our peas got so large they were busting at the seams!

Starting a garden is a healthy hobby.

Not only is gardening healthy for the environment, it is great for you as well! The act of gardening is great exercise and the perfect way to get out and grab some fresh air. Not to mention the luxury of all the delicious fresh vegetables you’ll be able to eat! If you’re like me, you reach for the closest and easiest snack to eat. If you have a garden those snacks may become fresh vegetables, berries, and fruits! It’s an all around productive and healthy hobby.

You’ll have the freshest produce.

Living in Alaska makes one really appreciate fresh fruit and vegetables. That short distance from the garden to your kitchen will give you the freshest produce possible. Sometimes you may need to taste test, so it may not even make it to the kitchen!

It’s so convenient.

Talk about fast food, getting fresh food from your own plants is as speedy as it gets! Having the convenience of a backyard grocery store is really a game changer.

Fresh strawberries, yum!

Bonus: Gardening is fun!

More importantly, it’s fun! Picking out what we’re going to grow for the year is such a fun time. You can really experiment with different things if you want, and watching those tiny seeds turning to salads, canned veggies, jams, smoothies and more is so exciting.

I hope this has encouraged you to start gardening today. I truly enjoy this hobby, and hope that you will too! If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below and I’ll be happy to answer. Thanks for visiting Everyday Alaska!
