These apps pay you back for everyday shopping such as groceries, fuel, gifts, and more. If you’re buying it anyway, you might as well be earning cash back, too! I’ve tested out the following apps and earned enough money to pay for gifts, household items, groceries, and more. Check out the apps that pay you to shop below, and start earning today!

My favorite apps that pay you to shop.

Points add up quickly with Fetch from everyday shopping.

Upside

ReceiptPal

Earning cash back couldn’t be easier than this! Scan receipts to fill up cards, earn points, and redeem them for retail gift cards. It’s that easy!

Rakuten

I’ve been using Rakuten for years now (literally since 2017!), and have earned hundreds of dollars in cash back from rebates. I just ordered Christmas cards and earned 11% back from Minted! They have a huge variety of stores that offer rebates, and Rakuten also lists coupon codes for you to use. Just login to the app, choose the store you’d like to shop at, make your purchase, and get earn money back! Join with this link today to earn $40 back on your first qualifying purchase!

TopCashback

TopCashback is like Rakuten but sometimes has a better rebate or different variety of stores. Rebates take longer to process, but you can get some great deals. Check out TopCashback here, and start earning rebates today.

Honey

I haven’t used this one as much as others, but they have good online coupon finds and do rebates as well. It’s very similar to Rakuten and TopCashback. I check all three for apps before I make a purchase to find the best rebate option and coupons. You can join Honey here!

Ibotta

Ibotta is another receipt scanning app, but you have to select offers before you scan your receipt. All you need to do is select a store, choose the items that match what you’ve purchased, scan your receipt, and earn! I’ve earned almost $50 so far with this app, and you can use this link to earn $10 from your first receipt!

Ibotta rewards are simple to earn and use.

Pogo

I just started with Pogo. You just scan receipts to earn money back, and it’s worthwhile doing if you’re scanning receipts for the other apps as well. It takes some time to build points, but is quick to scan. You can sign up through my link and enter code DEKZ61. You’ll get 250 bonus points after you’ve earned 5,000 points in the app.

Bonus!

The Best Alaskan Souvenirs and Where to Buy Them

May 5, 2023 by Everyday Alaska

Are you looking to commemorate your trip to Alaska with one of a kind souvenirs or hoping to grab some unique gifts to bring back for friends and family? This list of Alaskan souvenirs will give you a variety of ideas to choose from to remember your trip to the beautiful 49th State!

How do I know if something is really made in Alaska?

When you’re looking for Alaskan souvenirs you want something that is authentically Alaskan and made by locals. So, how do you go about finding out if what you’re buying is really made here? It’s pretty easy, just “Buy the Bear”!

What does “Buy the Bear” mean? As the State website explains “When purchasing products in Alaska, look for the mother bear and her cub logo signifying the product was manufactured in Alaska.” This will ensure that you get an Alaska made product. That being said, though, there are Alaska made items that may not have the bear logo. But, to ensure you get a made in Alaska product, it’s best to “Buy the Bear” when possible.

The made in Alaska logo. Buy the bear for authentic Alaskan souvenirs.
This is the logo you’ll find on Alaska made items.

All of the information provided is my personal opinion, unless otherwise cited or noted.

Where can I buy locally made Alaskan souvenirs?

Although sometimes it may take a bit to find what you’re looking for, you can find Alaska made souvenirs all over! More “touristy” type seasonal shops will likely have the same items from place to place, and most of these things are made in China or other places outside of the United States. If you visit local small businesses, fairs, festivals, and markets, though, you’ll find a treasure trove of amazing Alaska made items. To find out what markets, fairs, and more are coming up each month, sign up for my newsletter here.

Another great way to seek out some Alaskan souvenirs is by checking Instagram and Facebook. This is a great way to find artists and businesses local to the area of Alaska that you’ll be visiting. You can check out their products, see how they’re made, and connect with business to find out where they sell their Alaska made items.

What are the best Alaska made souvenirs?

There is such a great variety of Alaska made items that it’s hard to narrow it down, so I’ve just decided to include as many as I can think of! The items listed below are not only great souvenirs and gifts, but they’re also useful, beautiful, and practical items.

Gold

Bring back a little bit of what so many people ventured “North to Alaska” for! Check out gold in all its forms from raw nuggets to coins, jewelry, and more at the Alaska Mint in Anchorage.

Jade

Did you know that jade is the Alaska state gem? For good reason, too, as its beautiful colors make it a unique display piece, and its hardness makes it sturdy and useful. Visit Kobuk Valley Jade Company in Soldotna to learn more about our state gem and purchase a Made in Alaska piece for yourself.

Get two souvenirs in one with Alaskan jade that is made into an ulu.

Books

Finding books with Alaskan authors and illustrators is something that is easy to pick up in stores across Alaska. Almost every bookstore you’ll visit here will have an Alaska section. Take home a Alaskan read from a used book store or purchase a newly released novel as a gift. There are so many options to choose from for all ages of readers. Check out our Alaska children’s book list here.

Alaska Native Arts and Crafts

There is such a great variety of Alaska Native art and crafts to purchase. From beadwork, to scrimshawed ivory, masks, and jewelry, there is a plethora of items you can purchase. Great places to find authentic Alaska Native items for sale are the Sealaska Heritage Store in Juneau, the Anchorage Museum Store, and the Ch’k’iqadi Gallery at the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage. The Charlotte Jensen Native Arts Market, which occurs during Fur Rondy in March, is also a great place to see Native crafts from all over the state, along with the Craft Shop at the Alaska Native Medical Center.

Birch Bowls

Head to The Great Alaskan Bowl Company in Fairbanks and purchase a birch bowl. See the process of making these beautiful and useful Alaskan souvenirs, and purchase one for yourself.

Ulu

This cutting tool, which was made and used by Indigenous Alaskans, is a popular Alaskan souvenir. Its unique design and usefulness make it a top pick for many visitors looking for something to bring back home. You can find these in many places such as The Ulu Factory in Downtown Anchorage, and Alaska Native markets and craft fairs. Beware of imposters, though; many seasonal gift shops will have ulus that are not made in Alaska.

Art

You’ll find Alaska made art pieces everywhere along your journey through the 49th State. Paintings, pottery, photographs, and carvings are just some of the many items you can find at local stores and gift shops.

Jewelry

Dry Bags

Useful for many applications in Alaska and beyond, dry bags are a handy made in Alaska souvenir. Check out Nomar in Homer to see their large selections of these handy bags.

Clothes

Check out Alpine Fit and Nomar for Alaskan adventure gear that will last a lifetime. Also, be on the lookout for kuspuks, which are Alaska Native hooded garments with a distinctive front pocket. They often come in a multitude of fabric colors and patterns and are adorned with beautiful trims.

Some other garments you may want to check out are items made of qiviut, which is the underwool of a muskox. Qiviut scarfs, hats, and more can be found at Oomingmak in Anchorage.

Food

Bring a taste of Alaska back home with you with these delicious ideas and tasty treats.

Syrup

Try something unique with birch syrup! Head to Talkeetna for this uniquely Alaskan treat. Taste test syrups, and bring back a bottle for yourself or a friend.

If you come across fireweed jelly give it a try!

Honey

You can occasionally come across delicious local honey at farmers markets around the state.

The Alaska Flour Company, locally made seasoning, salsa, pasta, teas and more are some of the items you’ll find. Also, check out veggies with the Alaska Grown logo to snack on while you’re here.

This list of Alaskan souvenirs has a little something for everyone. From the foodie to the art collector, and the fashionista to your furry friends, there’s a little something in Alaska for everyone.

30+ Gift Ideas for Seniors

November 9, 2022 by Everyday Alaska

It’s hard to shop for the person who has everything, and by the time people are a bit older they usually have just that. You probably have heard your grandparents or other elderly family and friends say that they don’t need any gifts, and truthfully, they probably don’t. But, everyone loves to give gifts and no matter how old you are it’s nice to get gifts, too. Below, I’ve created a list of great gifts for senior adults so you can hopefully find the perfect gifts for the seniors in your life.

Please note that this post contains affiliate links which I may earn commission from. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Commissions from these qualifying purchases help support Everyday Alaska at no extra cost to you. Please follow the instructions on all of the recommended items. All of the information provided is my personal opinion, unless otherwise cited or noted.

Gifts of Time

Gifts of time and activities are one of the best types of gifts for seniors, or anyone, really. If you are lucky enough to live close to your grandparents or other elderly persons in your life, these may be just the ideas for you. If you’re farther away and aren’t able to see them in person, check out the categories below.

  • Go for a Drive-Many seniors spend much of their time at home, especially if they’re in a nursing home or assisted living, so getting out to see the sights is a treat. Due to mobility issues and more, it’s not always easy to go on outings when people get more elderly, but it’s always worth it.
  • Lunch-While you’re out and about, why not take them to get a fancy coffee or a nice lunch?
Grandma and I at her birthday party.
  • Plant Flowers-If they’re able, take seniors to a greenhouse to pick out some flowers, or choose some on your own. Head back to their home and help them plant the flowers in an area where they can view them from a window.
  • Home Repairs and Improvements-Does your friend or relative need safety railings added to their shower? Do they have a leaky faucet that needs repair? Does the shed need a new coat of paint? Often, these jobs that senior citizens could once easily do are not so simple anymore. Ask if they need any home repairs or improvements done, or see if you notice anything that needs sprucing up or that could be safer. Many of these could be DIY, but if not, hire a reputable company to lend some help.
  • Cooking and Baking-Maybe grandma is still having a great time cooking up a storm as always, but if that’s not the case it may be nice to go help her cook, bake, or even bring food over to her. Elderly adults may not have the energy or desire to cook anymore, and not cooking leads to not eating (or eating unhealthy meals), which leads to deteriorating health. Keep the seniors in your life happy and healthy with some hearty meals. (If grandma and/or grandpa live far away, consider sending them a Spoonful of Comfort meal!)
  • Home Chores-Shoveling, lawn care, and housekeeping are laborious chores for people of any age, but for senior adults some of these may not even be possible to attempt. To assist them, take on one or more of these chores yourself, but don’t get burned out! If it becomes too much or you don’t live nearby, hire companies to do these services. Always be sure to check reviews, the BBB, and more to ensure that these are legitimate and trustworthy companies. You don’t want anyone taking advantage of the elderly.
  • Outings-Take a trip to the zoo, a local park, or botanical garden. As I said before, I know outings with older adults may not be simple, but just know they do appreciate you taking time to spend with them, and you’ll enjoy it, too.
Trinity Greenhouse, a greenhouse in Soldotna, Alaska.
Head to a greenhouse to pick out some colorful flowers.

Gifts for Seniors to Enjoy Indoors

If your elderly loved one is unable to get outdoors much or just doesn’t enjoy doing so any more, these ideas are great options for them.

  • Window Clings-You can often pick up seasonal window clings at Walmart or other stores to help cheer up a room.
  • Storyworth-This is my favorite gift idea. Storyworth is a subscription that sends questions the recipient via email for them to answer. Once they have completed a year’s worth of questions, they get compiled into a book, creating their autobiography. Learn more about it (and save $10!) here! You can also check out my list of other great subscriptions here.
  • Cards and Other Games-Is grandma the card shark of the nursing home? Pick her up some new cards or get her hooked on a new game of Uno or Bananagrams.
  • Coloring Books-Pick up a new pack of markers or crayons to gift with it.
  • Photo Book-Creating a photo book with Shutterfly is the perfect gift for any grandparent or elderly friend or relative. They are much easier to see and hold than on a phone, and it’s a great way for them to share the pictures with other friends and relatives.
Friends and relatives may enjoy books of photos from years past.
  • Magazine Subscription-There’s a magazine out there for every interest. Some subscriptions even come in large print options, too, and they are a budget-friendly gift option.
  • Puzzle-The perfect gift to do on their own or with a group. Puzzles are especially popular at senior centers and assisted living homes, so it’s a gift they can share if they would like to as well.
  • Plants-Any low maintenance plant helps cheer up a space and makes a dandy gift.
  • Personalized Calendar-Creating a custom calendar for older friends and relatives is a great way to help them keep track of holidays, events, birthdays and more, while also having beautiful family photos to see.
  • Lotion-Just because their getting older doesn’t mean self care goes out the window! Grab their favorite kind of lotion or give a new one a try. According to this RealSimple article “the main concern with patients in their 60s and beyond is lack of hydration and moisture retention”, so it makes for a very useful gift.
  • Books-If your parents, grandparents, or any other senior adult on your gift list loves to read as much as my grandma did, then books are a great option!
River City books in Soldotna, AK. A great place to find books for anyone of any age, including gifts for senior adults.
Head to the bookstore to find a new read for the senior citizen on your gift list.
  • New Placemats/Tablecloth-The placemats and tablecloths that adorn your elder’s table may be older than you. Spiff things up a bit by getting them some new table linens. You can even DIY these if you enjoy sewing.
  • Perfume-Change up the scent or get one of your loved ones favorites.
  • Puzzle Books-You can often find may puzzle books in large print for older adults who may have trouble with their eyesight. This is also an inexpensive gift for senior adults if you’re on a budget.
  • Towels-Out with the old, in with the new! That is, if they approve! Just like the placemats and table cloths, your grandparents, great aunts and uncles, parents, and more, may have towels that are up there in age. I remember my grandma and I went through a catalog to pick out new towels and bathroom accessories she wanted to order, and she was pretty excited about getting things spruced up. Not sure if they’d like it? Just ask.
  • Digital Photo Frame-Keep the senior adults in your life up to date with the latest pictures from all their friends and relatives by purchasing a frame that can receive pictures via email. I have not purchased this frame yet, but it has amazing reviews.
  • Kid’s Artwork Book-If Grandpa Pete or Great Aunt Mary are running out of room on their refrigerator for more kid’s art, you can take those masterpieces and create a book for them to view all the creativity of their grandkids and great nieces and nephews in one place!
  • Candies-Who doesn’t like a box of chocolates or their favorite sweet treat as a gift?

Outdoor Gifts for Seniors

The best part of these gifts is they can be enjoyed inside or outside, so no matter what your recipient’s preference is, they’ll get a useful gift they can appreciate.

  • Humming Bird Feeder-My grandma enjoyed watching humming birds. The great thing about watching humming birds, or birds at any feeder for that matter, is that you can watch them from inside if the the feeder is in front of a window, or you can sit on your porch and view them as well.
  • Cane-An odd gift? Maybe. Useful? Definitely. If the senior adult on your shopping list uses a cane to assist them, why not make sure they’re using a pretty one? My grandma had one with butterflies on it and got many compliments about it. I’d imagine that if someone reluctant to use a cane got compliments about theirs, it may just encourage them to use it more often and be safer by doing so.
  • Professional Photography Session-A perfect gift for the senior who has everything. Maybe they’d like to get spiffed up and have a session by themselves, with their spouse, or with the kids, grandkids, dogs, cats, parrots, or whatever else they may have. It’s a fantastic reason to get dolled up and a great memory to have as well.
  • Flowers-Have your recipient pick out flowers they’d like or choose some on your own to plant for them in a pot or outdoor planter box.
Flower baskets make for pretty summertime gifts.
  • Flags-If your grandparents and elderly relatives need a new flag for outside, this would make a useful gift for them.
  • Metal Birds-I really love these. They are just metal bird shapes that can be pounded into trees or posts for decoration. They don’t take up much room, look really unique, and come in a variety of species. I got this one on Etsy for my dad.
  • Garden Flags-Many box stores and shops sell small garden or decorative flags throughout the seasons. They add a cute addition to any outdoor area.

This gift list has a variety of ideas for senior adults, grandparents, elderly neighbors, parents, aunts, uncles and more, but more than likely the gift they’ll most appreciate is your time. If you’re nearby, go visit them. If you’re far away, take time to call, FaceTime (some seniors are more tech savvy than you think, and many nursing homes can help set up calls for you), and send a card.

Is the Instant Pot Really Worth It?

October 26, 2022 by Everyday Alaska

Please note that this post contains affiliate links which I may earn commission from. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Commissions from these qualifying purchases help support Everyday Alaska at no extra cost to you. Please follow the instructions on all of the recommended items. All of the information provided is my personal opinion, unless otherwise cited or noted.

Small kitchen appliances. Is it possible to have too many? My head says no, but my shelf space says yes. Read ahead to find out if the Instant Pot is one of those appliances you should make room for on your shelf, or if you should save the money and the shelf space. If you want the final verdict, you can skip to the bottom, otherwise read on to get the whole scoop.

Cons

I figured we might as well start with the downsides and work our way to the pros in this Instant Pot review, so here we go!

The Learning Curve

My husband and I were lucky enough to receive an Instant Pot Duo Nova for Christmas a few years back. I was so excited, but also terrified. Pressure cooking dinner in our kitchen?! Umm, no thank you. I wasn’t too sure about using it for quite awhile, so there it sat. Then, after seeing many good recipes and the benefits of using this cooker, I decided to give it a try.

I throughly read the instructions (a first for me since I usually just wing it), watched how-to videos on YouTube, and built up the confidence to do my test run with it. I would love to say it went swimmingly, but it totally freaked me out. The sound of the pressure being released was much louder than I anticipated, and I thought it was going to blow up. Not fun. But, everything went as it should and I was ready to get cookin’!

After figuring out how to operate it, it was time to learn about cooking times. This was a learning curve, but now I feel like I’ve finally got it figured out. Cook time magnets and stickers really helped me figure out times, but there were a few instances in between where I expected to pull out fully cooked chicken and ended up having it raw in the middle. Time and repetition has helped me get a handle on cooking with the Instant Pot. Now I feel much more comfortable using it, and get more consistent results.

This cook time sticker is a helpful guide to on the Instant Pot.

Space

The downside of the Instant Pot is that it is large. If you have a smaller house like me, then you know space in the kitchen is valuable. This appliance has to be fairly big for what it does and the volume they can hold, but they really take up a hefty amount of counter and shelf space.

Pros

Now that we’ve covered the cons, lets move on to all the positives of the Instant Pot.

Variety

This is really a multifunctional kitchen tool. You can use it for slow cooking, steaming, rice cooking, and more. Plus, there are tons of recipes out there to use (just check Pinterest!), which really gives you a good variety of things to cook.

Stove Top Space

The Instant Pot really shines during holidays. When you’ve got all your burners filled up, you can set up the Instant Pot on your counter and cook a side or main dish there. I think it’s especially useful for cooking mashed potatoes when making a spread for Christmas or Thanksgiving.

Multitasking

In a rush to make dinner for guests but you also have to clean up the kitchen before they get there? No problem! Get your Instant Pot meal started and let it do all the work cooking while you clean.

My most made Instant Pot meal. Steel cut oats and raisins, topped with nuts and banana after cooking.

Quick Meals

Instant Pot’s really do make quick work out of cooking. I primarily use mine for four different things: rice, chicken, potatoes, and steel cut oats. Using this handy appliance for steel cut oats every morning makes breakfast a breeze. No waiting for water to boil or making sure it doesn’t boil over, and it’s consistent. It’s just so simple.

The Final Review

So, now that you’ve read about the pros and cons, what do you think? After using my Instant Pot for a few years now, I’d say it’s worth getting. If you can swing the space to squeeze an Instant Pot between your waffle iron and toaster, it’s time to try the Instant Pot for yourself!

Tip: If you’re looking for a great deal on the Instant Pot, check out sales during and around major holidays, including Black Friday!

Subscription Gift Ideas for Everyone on Your List

October 3, 2022 by Everyday Alaska

Are you hoping to find a unique and useful gift idea? Maybe you’re shopping for a friend’s birthday, Mother’s Day, getting gifts for everyone on your Christmas list, or looking to purchase something fun for yourself? Why no look into a subscription? You may think they’ll be too expensive, or you won’t find one that fits the individual you planning on giving it to. Believe me, there are many affordable options out there, and there’s definitely a subscription for everyone on your list. Below, I’ve listed subscriptions that anyone from babies to seniors will love!

KiwiCo

KiwiCo subscription boxes have something for every age and interest. They’re primarily targeted at groups ages infant to teens, but they’re fun for everyone. I purchased a subscription for a friends little ones, and they really enjoyed it. She even wanted to save an activity to do with me, so we got to do one together and it was tons of fun! These monthly boxes are affordable, educational, and promote creativity. You can also choose the length and type of subscription you want. Get $10 off your KiwiCo purchase here!

Universal Yums

This is a gift the whole family can enjoy. Universal Yums will send a curated box of snacks from a different country every month to the recipients. You can choose the amount of snacks that are sent for the subscription, the subscription length, and the first country that will be featured in the subscription. Plus, each box of snacks and treats includes information on the snack’s country of origin, so they can learn while they snack! Get $5 off here!

Harvest Host

Gift your loved ones a subscription to Harvest Host. Harvest Host allows members the opportunity to camp at a variety of farms, attractions, and even golf courses (if you add it to the subscription). With this membership, they can stay the night at these fun locations for free. They can take their motorhome, camper, fifth-wheel, or other self-contained camping vehicle and enjoy their camping adventure in a new and special location.

AAA

Give the gift of AAA. Roadside assistance, towing, discounts, travel planning, and more are included in subscriptions to AAA service. I received a AAA subscription from my aunt, and it saved me a bundle on towing costs. Give the gift of peace of mind and tons of savings with AAA.

Storyworth

This gift is as much a gift for you as it is for the recipient. Storyworth is a subscription that emails prompts to the recipient every week. They respond to the email at any time with stories and even photos. Once a year of questions is complete, Storyworth compiles all of the photos and responses into a book, creating the recipients autobiography. I purchased a subscription for both of my parents last Christmas, and it’s been so fun reading their responses. Learn more about Storyworth here, and get $10 off your purchase!

Spotify

Who doesn’t love music!? Giving the gift of Spotify premium allows the listener to enjoy their tunes ad-free, with unlimited skips, and they can download from the Spotify library to listen anywhere. It’s an inexpensive gift that anyone is sure to appreciate.

The Flower Letters

Have you heard of The Flower Letters subscription? If not, I’ll give you a little lowdown on it. The Flower Letters is a subscription that tells a story through letters recipients get in the mail twice a month for a year. There are multiple stories to choose from. It’s like watching you’re favorite tv show, but doing it the “old school” way by waiting to hear the next episode via mail. It’s a unique gift to give, and gives your recipient mail to look forward to all year long.

FabFitFun

I’ve had a FabFitFun subscription for years now. I get a box with various fitness, cosmetic, household, and other goodies every season. FabFitFun lets you choose the items from a list of things they have picked out, and depending on the membership level you can pick out every item, or they will choose a few of them for you. Many of the items are high-value, brand names that honestly I’d probably never try outside of getting this box, due to the cost of buying the individual item. I gifted my mom a box subscription one season. It’s like a surprise within a gift because you give the subscription, but they get to choose some of their own gifts within the box. Kind of fun! To save $10 on the first box, click here!

Amazon Prime

I use my Amazon Prime membership almost every day. It allows me to get free shipping on Prime items, stream tons of movies and TV shows, and more. This is a gift that almost anyone on your list is sure to use, whether it be to watch their favorite TV show or order their groceries.

Magazines

There is a magazine out there for every interest. Do you know the favorite hobbies or interests of people on your gift list? Perfect! You can likely find a magazine to fit them, and yearly subscriptions are often under $10. Some of my favorites are Country Living, Taste of Home, and All Recipes.

Audible

Do you know someone who loves to read but may not have the time to read as much as they’d like to? Gift them a subscription to Audible, and they can listen to a variety of audiobooks at their convenience!

I hope this list has given you some great gift ideas. If you have a favorite subscription you’d like to share, or have tried one of the ones listed above, give a review of it in the comments!
